Converting to a - GM Cars. Untilmost cars with air conditioning used R Freon refrigerant that is said to have a negative side effect of damaging the ozone layer and is no longer produced in most countries. Contrary to popular belief, most cars originally equipped with R can be converted to a and still keep you just as cool. The front half of it looks like a bullet.

There are still numerous vehicles on the market with air-conditioning systems originally designed for refrigerant R Ever since then, R12 systems had to be converted during maintenance or repair work.
Ra was and is used as replacement refrigerant besides several "drop-in" refrigerants refrigerant mixtures. Even today, the conversion from R12 to Ra is still an ongoing topic in the area of classic and modern classic cars as well as in several non-EU countries.
In the course of conversion, the system must be checked for leak tightness. Leaks must be corrected beforehand. All components should be checked for function and damage. The filter dryer is to be replaced. Sealing rings should be replaced. In the course of this replacement it is also recommended to flush the air-conditioning system. Compressor Oil And Refrigerant. Capacity Page 9 Of 39 Charts Collection. R 12 To R a Refrigerant Retrofit. Practical Tip On Compressor Oil.Automotive air conditioning compressors require specific types of lubricants.
If the wrong type of compressor oil or the wrong viscosity compressor oil is used, it may damage the compressor. PAO Polyalphaolefin oil can sometimes be used as a substitute for certain PAG oils if the compressor manufacturer approves it. This can lead to poor lubrication and premature compressor failure.
Universal compressor oils should NOT be used in Ryf applications. The following is a list of recommended lubricants by compressor manufacturer. A low oil level can starve the compressor for oil and lead to compressor failure. Too much oil can hurt cooling performance. Our advice is this: Why take a chance using a universal oil when you can just as easily use the correct PAG oil? Every compressor manufacturer I've ever interviewed says the same thing: Uuse the specific type of oil specified for their compressor.
In most cases, it is some type of PAG oil. If an oil is used that does not meet those requirements fairly closely, it might cause wear and friction issues. Eventually, this could cause the compressor to fail. You should not intermix different viscosities because the viscosity of the mixture may be "out of range" for the appliction for a number of reasons. Thicker oils are typically specified for heavier bearing and seal loads, but also require slightly greater bearing clearances.
If a thinner oil is used, it may not provide adequate lubrication.
Likewise, an application that specifies a thinner oil to minimize friction and drag may not receive adequate lubrication if a thicker viscosity oil is used. The universal oil will be a compromise blend that fails to meet anyof the OEM specifications.
It will be too thick for some applications, and too thin for other applications. A universal oil may work okay in some compressors, but not others. How to Properly Recharge Your AC System
The front was apparently rebuilt due to a crash before I bought it. I have yet to see any specs for an Extended Cab. For now, I'm going to assume the specs are 40 oz. I'm replacing and flushing almost everything except for the evaporator. Can anyone give me some advice on this and why the crew cab would have 8oz more? Thanks all! This is my first post.
Joined Sep 27, A larger interior space to cool. The evaporator core is probably a little larger. You should have at least 48 oz on hand but it should only be filled by a pressure gauge. The 40 oz would be the max allowed, doesn't mean you have to have that amount in the system especially your doing a retrofit. Is that 40 oz number found is for R12 or Ra? It may take 40 oz or less depending on the ambient air temperature.
The important part is getting the right amount and type of refrigerant oil. Is your question for the Silverado? If it is the evaporator core may blow since Ra system works on higher pressures than R Joined Sep 28, YOU will need a ac pressure gauge set.
As you add R you monitor the pressures and watching the high side for a rise in pressure to PSI 95 deg f. Thanks guys! I have the gauge, vacuum pump, flush kit. This was already converted to Ra before I got it and have been driving it for about 5 years.
The compressor was making noise probably just the clutch but I'm replacing the compressor, condenser, accumulator, orifice tube and schrader valve on the high side since I believe it is leaking some. I didn't know about the evaporator core risk. I hope I don't have to replace that thing. I really need a new entire dash so if that happens, I'll probably go all the way and have the truck down for a week or so. Great advice on watching the high side not to exceed I never hear much talk about the high side.
And yeah, around here it has been degrees for the past week, so I'll be looking at the higher pressures. Next job is my car which is a Ford and I might pick your brain when I get the numbers in, but if I recall, the high side was low and the low side was much higher than when I charged it last summer.
I couldn't find much info about a low high side reading. But that's another day and I'm pretty sure that isn't going to happen until our temps get below the 90's.
It's no fun to work in the garage at degrees.Take a moment to drop by The Store and shop our products. If you don't find what you're looking for, shoot us an email webmaster chevytrucks. We add new items all of the time. Welcome, Guest.

R12 and A call for different weighted volumes. DuringR refrigerant capacity was bumped to 3. When substituting Ra, adjust the charge weight to 3.
Rich It's difficult to know just how much you don't know until you know it. In other words Quote from: bd on July 14,PM. Is this the same truck with the pulley alignment problem? Did you replace the accumulator? Did you evacuate it before attempting to recharge? Did you replace any other parts? The answers to these questions are significant.
So, how much oil have you actually added thus far? The rule of thumb for oil charge in our trucks is 6 oz in the compressor, 2 oz in the accumulator, 1 oz in the condenser, and 1 oz in each evaporator on a brand new, or otherwise empty, system.
That's a total of 10 oz of oil for a 2-door cab. The problem you're facing is not knowing exactly how much oil is distributed between the various components, now. Notwithstanding, you can make a reasonable estimate. If you replace the compressor again, drain the oil out of the existing compressor into a measuring cup.
How much oil did you recover? Fewer than three ounces recovered - pour 6 oz of liquid oil directly into the suction port of the new compressor and let it sit clutch face down for 20 - 30 minutes to lubricate the front seal, before installing the compressor on the vehicle. Your net charge should be 3. I hope this has helped. That's good news!
Since you flushed the system and added exactly 8 oz of oil, you know exactly how much oil is in the system. Recover the oil from the existing compressor when you swap it out, and add that same amount to the new compressor, plus 2 oz, for a total of 10 oz. There is a light at the end of this tunnel!
Logged C30 Custom Deluxe Ext. Logged Rich It's difficult to know just how much you don't know until you know it. Thanks BD, I didn't know that and will eventually recharge the AC on my 85 which was converted some time back and has a leak.If I do want to bring some home, I can have my ice cream handpacked in my own container. This eliminates the need for all disposable bottles glass as well as plastic. Especially in the summer. So I got a Soda Stream Penguin soda maker for those times I crave some fizz.
The soda maker itself is plastic, but the carafes are glass, and the soda maker replaces hundreds of disposable bottles. At the bakery down the street, I can have my bread placed in my own cloth bag and avoid all packaging. Bread keeps fresh when stored in the cloth bag inside an airtight tin.
I reuse a popcorn tin that was sent to me as a gift several years ago.Datatables show entries not showing
Often, thrift stores have more of these tins than they know what to do with. And since I buy so few new things, I can afford to spend more for quality, plastic-free food. See my post Fresh Bread: Buy It, Store It, Keep It Fresh Without Plastic.
Ask your local grocer to take them back.
Or empty your berries into your own container before leaving the store and leave the plastic basket behind. If enough of us do this, perhaps merchants will take note. Unfortunately, the milk bottle does contain an unrecyclable plastic cap. But I would rather buy milk in a glass bottle capped with plastic than milk contained in plastic on all sides. Going in on it with friends can make it more affordable.
Check out my instructions for storing cheese without plastic. I agonized for a while over which brands of frozen meals used the best containers, but in the end there was just no sound alternative. How to get an inverse demand function
They all use plastic. Even frozen food trays that seem to be made of cardboard are lined with plastic. Read more about plastic in chewing gum here. The key is bringing my own reusable bags and containers with me to the store. You can carry the same kind of cotton bags for bulk purchases as for produce (see above.
Why shop from bulk bins and take new plastic bags. A question I am frequently asked is how to avoid paying for the additional weight of the container. Stores have various methods for deducting the container weight. At Whole Foods, for example, I take my containers to the customer service desk to have them weighed before filling. That weight is then deducted from the total weight of the item at the checkout counter.
At Berkeley Bowl, empty containers are weighed at the Bulk Counter and then weighed again at the same counter when full before checking out. At Rainbow Grocery, customers weigh their own containers. And all the cotton bags that I use are printed with the tare weight on their tags. Concerned about cross contamination for people with allergies.
Check out my post on avoiding gluten while still living plastic-free. Even if you live in an area that does not have bulk food stores, you can still buy non-perishable goods in large size packages, which will decrease the amount of plastic used overall.
